Books that made me a romance reader

Before I officially called myself a romance reader, I was just always gravitating towards stories that made me feel something. I would read almost anything, but I noticed a trend in ones that I couldn't put down, romance. I didn't know what I was searching for, whether it was love, loss, longing, or unforgettable connections.

These 5 books changed me. They didn't just make me cry (though I did). They made me love the romance genre. So here are my recommendations if you are looking for something in that area.

they both die

❤️ They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera This was one of the first books that truly broke me, in the best way. You go into knowing the ending the title tells you, the first page tells you, but once you get to know the story and characters, the ending just becomes harder to accept as you turn the page. The relationship between Mateo and Rufus is tender, honest, and heartbreaking. Watching two people fall in love, knowing they don’t have much time left, made every moment feel more meaningful.

once upon

🌷Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber This book made me fall in love with fantasy romance. From the magical setting to the slow-burn tension, everything about this story pulled me in. Evangeline’s hopefulness mixed with Jack’s mystery and charm created such an addictive dynamic. You’re never quite sure if you should trust him, and that uncertainty makes every interaction more exciting. I loved how their relationship wasn’t rushed; it developed through shared moments, hard choices, and emotional growth. This book is a part of a series, which makes it better because their story is told throughout the course of 3 books. Perfect for a slow burn :)

heights

🕯️Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë This is probably the most chaotic love story I’ve ever read. When I read Wuthering Heights, I remember feeling frustrated, confused, and strangely fascinated all at the same time. Heathcliff and Catherine aren’t easy to love as characters, and their relationship definitely isn’t something to admire. But I couldn’t stop thinking about them, even after I finished the book. What stayed with me most was how intense their connection felt, like they couldn’t exist without each other, even when they were hurting themselves and everyone around them. It can be dark, messy, and uncomfortable BUT worth the read.

if he had been

🌹If He Had Been with Me by Laura Nowlin This book felt personal; I was almost offended. It’s about missed chances, timing, and the quiet kind of love that grows over the years. Autumn and Finn’s story made me think about all the “what ifs” in life, the people we almost end up with and the paths we don’t take. You honestly just have to read it. I won't give spoilers, but let's just say I emailed Laura Nowlin (the author) after I finished the book. Though like me, if you read it and feel...upset, she recently came out with "If Only I had Told Her," which is a spin-off in Finny's POV.

the ssong

🏛️The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller If one book completely shaped my love for romance, it’s this one. Patroclus and Achilles’ story is beautiful, gentle, and devastating. Their love feels pure and timeless, even in the middle of war and tragedy. Every page is filled with emotion, longing, and devotion. It reminded me that romance doesn’t have to be flashy to be powerful. Sometimes, the simplest love stories are the ones that hurt the most. But still read it

If you’re new to romance, or if you’re looking for books that will change you, I couldn’t recommend these enough. Each one played a role in making me the reader I am today.
